On the 8th September, 2014 the Chargé d’Affaires of Malta Mr. Walter Mallia and his wife Mrs. Anna Mallia were guests of honour at a reception commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Malta’s Independence. The reception was hosted by the Hon Consul of the Republic of Malta in the Azores Dom. Augusto de Athayde at Palacio Jose do Canto, Ponta Delgada. The visit was made possible by the Portuguese Maltese Chamber of Commerce.
The National Anthems of Malta, Portugal and the official regional Hymn of the Azores were played by a Military band.
Present at the event, were H.E the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, Dr. Vasco Alves Cordeiro, the Mayor of Ponta Delgada Dr. Jose Manuel Bolierio, members of the Consular Corps based in the Azores, as well as a Maltese family who live on the Island.
The Chargé D’Affaires made reference to the relations between Malta and Portugal which date back to the 18th Century, the century of Portuguese influence in Malta. He explained that Malta has a growing economy which can offer potential for companies seeking to expand their business. He mentioned the recent set up of the Portuguese Maltese Chamber of Commerce in Lisbon and in Porto and the increase in interest in business enquiries between the two countries. He stressed that efforts will continue to be made for the introduction of a direct fllight between Malta and Portugal. He highlighted that one should initiate an exchange of information between the two Islands with regard to Tourism. He also referred to the opportunities that exist in Malta in the various sectors, such as financial services, high value added manufacturing, ICT, education, Pharmaceuticals, Digital Gaming, Film Industry and Medical Tourism.
Mr.Mallia also made reference to the Valletta European Capital of Culture and to
Malta’s success in the teaching of English.
